The open and closed cross-section under eccentric loading... on a curved beam. A tribute to Javier Manterola
Abstract
In this paper, an exact linear-elasticity formulation has been developed for the analysis of curved beams with planar centreline. The purpose is identical to that of an article which Javier Manterola authored in 1976: to look deeper into the behaviour of beams when they are eccentrically loaded by cross-sectional forces. When incorporating curvature into the formulation, new sectional parameters appear that condition the structural behaviour of the beam, which is governed by the torsional slenderness. A study has been made of the relationship between these parameters
and the curvature. Finally, the structural response of open and closed cross-section beams has been evaluated in terms of curvature and torsional slenderness. This work provides a rigorous method to assess the response of curved beams under torsion, and is therefore an extension of the traditionally established criteria for straight beams.
