Brittle Behavior of Corroded Rebars
Abstract
Corrosion of reinforcement is one of the main reasons for reducing the durability of structures. Corrosion results in the appearance of different defects with different geometries. This study focuses on evaluating
the mechanical behaviour of rebars with different types of defects, from generalised corrosion, pitting to
stress corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement. The results obtained show that the strength of steels does
not depend only on material loss, but that it is very important to evaluate the geometry of the defects.
