Abstract

Until the last decade, most bridges with spans ranging from 75 to 94 m were mainly erected with steel decks, by free cantilever method (precast or in-situ) or by precast full-segment elevation method. In several countries worldwide, steel decks were and are still systematically adopted. In the past decade, in the sequence of a long-term R&D multidisciplinary project, a Movable Scaffolding System was applied for the first time for construction of a multi-span viaduct with 90m long spans. This paper describes this pioneer project, focusing the bridge construction method and its impact in the overall bridge design.
